My Valheim addiction is a problem. Enough said.
Actually, no, I'll elaborate. It hurts my soul that one of my favourite games has such outdated-looking UI. I've been playing this game since the very early days of early access, and I specifically held off from looking at teasers for 1.0 to save my first impression until I got to play. So imagine my surprise when I load it up and the UI is still... that. (Here's a link to the Game UI Database, if you're unfamiliar)
Listen, it works. Valheim is such an impressively light game for 2026, and the art style is intentionally pixellated and, well, look at the troll... That guy's pretty ugly. I just see so much room for improvement in this UI. So, while I was sailing to find the Elder, I accidentally opened Figma, and accidentally started researching, and then accidentally made a speed-mockup of my new HUD.
During my time as a UI Tech Artist at Big Ant, I haven't had to do much design work at all. Going back into a classic research, generating ideas, random sketching and throwing stuff onto a canvas has been so refreshing. I didn't realise how much I missed design and art until now.
This is just my first mockup, obviously! Take a quick look at the research process so far - going and annotating on my iPad after a long day is actually super relaxing, so this FigJam board is going to expand even further.Â
Here's some quick little item container concepts... I'm not sure I'm super happy with them yet! I would really like to incorporate some Celtic Knots in these, but we'll see how I go.
And here's some me playing with shapes for the food hotbar and the health and stamina bars.
I do want to repeat - this project is SUPER work in progress! It's me being determined to get back into the swing of the design process after being stuck in XAML-land for three years. I'm having a lovely time and trying not to put too much pressure on myself!
